The Volunteer Organisation:

IDA ( in defense of animals) was founded in 1999 by Dr. Sheri Speede an American Veterinarian and is managed by Agnes Souchal a French national.

There are around 20 local staff members and 4-7 volunteers at any one time.

IDA rescue center is located in the Mbargue forest of the Central Province of Cameroon near the confluence of the Sanaga and Yong rivers.

Volunteer Roles:

6 month stays are standard.

Volunteers have a number of responsibilities in carrying out the day to day running of the center

• Overseeing Local Cameroon Staff (french speaking)
• Ensuring food and supplies are brought in the local villages and towns.
• Helping in feeding and care of the chimps
• Other tasks and projects as needed.

Professionally Skilled Volunteers

Volunteers with veterinary or medical training, mechanical, electrical or construction skills & experience can negate their length of stay for shorter periods if desired.

Volunteer Skills & Experience:

Essential Skills:

• French at least to an advanced-intermediate level with good conversational ability. Being a french speaking country and working with local staff members, volunteers need to speak f.
• Experience in living in a developing country , or experience working with chimps.

Desirable skills:

• Fluency in English
• Team work
• Ability to drive  a small manual truck

Volunteer Costs:

If required Accommodation and food is provided by the rescue center at no cost to volunteers.
